Mr. Brightside

I love the Killers, I'd definitely call my self quite a big fan. I have about fifty Killers songs clogging up my ITunes and always welcome their songs on shuffle.



So it's a new day and I'm still miserable. I just don't feel at home, at home any more if that makes any sense. It's just boring. Everyone is different, friends, family etc... I've definitely put Pontefract behind me now. I hate Stoke but I love it and I miss my independence and housemates.

Nevertheless, I have Mr. Brightside in my head today, a song that keeps me cheery. I'm excited to write about it actually because technically, whether you think it or not it is one of the BIGGEST tunes of the 21st Century. That's not just my opinion either.

•  UK radio stations Absolute radio and XFM named it "song of the decade". 
• It was also revealed in April 2010 by Last.Fm that it was the most listened to track since the launch of online music services. 
• It has also been voted number 9 in the greatest guitar riffs of the 21st century by Total Guitar Magazine. 

This song just takes me back to great nights out. You can guarantee that you will hear this song at some point on your night out. It is an old classic which will never get old.
The second it comes on you can just see everyone brighten up and start jumping up and down.

Especially in the club in my home town, BIG FELLAS. There are no words to describe Big Fella's all I can say is it's an experience everyone needs to have and unless you experience it yourself, you cannot be told.

This is always the last song they play as everyone is leaving. (Unless your in the room upstairs, then it's the Postman Pat theme tune.)


I couldn't help myself I had to pop it in. Don't ask me why they play it. It takes me back to my childhood when things were simple. Those were the days <3

Anyway, getting back on track. This song was the first song ever written By Brandon Flowers and David Keuning. It was on their Debut album Hot fuss which was released in 2004 although the song was originally made in 2001.

This song has pretty much always been on my playlist. Considering I was about 13 when the song was released this sounds about right. The Killers Album was one of the first I bought myself.

They are getting back together in May 2011 so I'm going to make it my mission to see them, I can almost guarantee they will play Mr.Brightside, they always have.

Did you know:

• They have been up for 7 Grammy's but have never won, but they have won a a Brit awards and two NME awards.
• This song is one of the longest chart sitters in the 21st Century being in the top 100 for 71 weeks altogether. January 2010 was when it was last in, that's SIX years after it was first released.
• They made 2 demo's of the song before they released it in 2003 and gave them out for free. 

Santa Baby

My Earworm today fits my day perfectly.

My house mates and I are having our very own Christmas today as it is our last day alone together before the Christmas holidays. Exciting....

Santa baby by Kylie Minogue is probably the most popular version for our generation, altough there is millions of versions of it.




We have been preparing the Christmas dinner and dancing around singing separate lines each.
Me: Santa baby, slip a sable under the tree for me.
Naomi: been an awful good girl
Siobhan: Santa baby so hurry down the chimney tonight.
Then all sing together :D

Brilliant. The dinner smells lovely and it is making us hungry.

Santa, apparently has been to our house and put goodies in our stocking. You would think this nice gesture should bring us together but no, instead we have spent the day debating which one of us it was.

No one will own up and I'm eager to know who. Everytime we've got into the heated discussion about who it is, we have burst into 'Santa baby song'. It's great and it is dead Christmassy in our house. So come over if you fancy carolling with four off key girls.

Miss Piggy has done her own version of this song and I'm not going to lie it is my favourite as she is my idol.
Ironic considering I'm about to eat one of her kind.- Pig in blanket obviously. (She's not really BTW).



So Merry Christmas from house 4. It's been cracking.

Tears in Heaven

So my Earworm today is an old classic. Eric Clapton-Tears in heaven.



I was totally shocked to find that two of my housemates, thats fifty percent of my house didn't know this song. I thought everyone knew it. I've known it from a young age.

I don't quite know what it is about this song that I like but I do really really like it and consider it a nice treat when it comes on shuffle in Itunes. 

It was written in1992 and was about his four year old son who had died falling from the 53rd floor of a building in New York.

Did you know:

• The song has received 3 grammys and has been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame 3 times!
• He came 4th in the rolling stones magazine list of 100 greatest guitarists of all time despite originally struggling to learn the guitar when he was younger.
• He grew up thinking his mother was his sister.

Dreidel

Really odd Earworm today. A traditional Chanukah song. Dreidel Dreidel Dreidel.

Now i'm not Jewish, in fact i'm Christian so I can't really explain my song choice. All I can say is my housemates and I sing this ALL the time. For no apparent reason.

We love it and it tickles us. It started at a yearly festival called Leeds and Reading Festival and my housemates friend sang it (who knows why) and it has just stuck ever since.

I obviously went to the Leeds Festival (the better one).

I am deadly serious if you do not know the song don't listen to it because it is so infectious. You will have it in your head forever. Part of me resents it.

The simple, repetitive lyrics are spell binding. 


I have a little Dreidel. I made it out of clay.

This irritating song was written by Samuel S. Grossman and composed by Mikhl Gelbart. Unfamiliar names to me too.

This is a cool fact:


Dreidel came about when the Greeks controlled the Jewish lands and banned Jews from learning the Torah forcing them to learn in hidden dark forests. The king had many patrols though so they couldn't always do it so the would quickly hide the Torah and pull out the Dreidel and pretend to play.

I hope your burdened with this song in your heads too, now.

Twelve days of chirstmas

I know it is late but being a student I am terribly busy doing assignments etc..

Anyway my Earworm today has been inspired by the fact that my housemates and I HAVE PUT UP CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS. I know a lot of you may be thinking, it's a bit early isn't it...

Well I say... Bah Humbug Get some Christmas Spirit. It only comes once a year.

The song I've chosen isn't the most popular but it is still one I sing every year.

It excites me that Christmas is around the corner and I've already done the majority of my shopping.

Doesn't this song just take you back to your youth and give you a great Christmassy feel. We are all ready in this household.

Did you know:

• It is sung in France, Scotland and Australia too and they all have totally different lyrics, the French sing each number as if it is another addition to the dinner plate.
• It was first published in England in 1780 but some evidence shows it to be from earlier than that and of French origin.
• The twelve days of Christmas don't start until after Christmas. I may sound daft for not knowing that but i'm sure i'm not the only one. This surprised me. I don't think it makes complete sense. 

It's great though, for that Christmas vibe. The count down starts soon hope you all have your advent calenders ready!

Take me down to the paradise city

Todays Earworm is 'Guns 'N' Roses - Paradise City' easily one of my favourite Guns songs.

 It is a brilliant song by the band and one which is so easy to sing along to. I love it and have spent many a drunken nights walking home with my housemate singing it.

It has also recently been re-used for the Anchor butter advert. I absolutely love this advert and again i'm always singing along. It is one of my favourite adverts to date (yes I like adverts).



The cows working in a factory is really funny and I love the idea. My favourite part is the cow putting money in a vending machine for a snack and having the choice of different chunks of grass. It has made me laugh my ass off time and time again.

I think it's great.

The Band have been together since 1985 and the name came from combining two band members names together, although the band member Tracii Guns left they still kept the name.

Axl Rose is the front man and also every one knows Slash. I didn't know Slash wasn't an original member although he did come along pretty early and fit right in. I would even say he completed the band.

Paradise city was on their debut album apppetite for destruction in 1987 and was released as a single in 1988.
Although the best it did was number 5 in US charts the album itself was and is still to this day the best selling debut album of all time, worldwide.

The song Paradise City came about while the group were travelling in the back of a van and Axl sang 'Take me down to the paradise city' and then Slash joined in by singing 'where the grass is green and the girls are pretty'.

They then sang the first line again and Slash tried 'where the girls are fat and they've got big titties.'
Although Slash thought that was the better version the rest of the band didn't agree and thats how we have those great lyrics today.

They have won Ten Awards and have been nominated for 21. They have been nominated for 3 Grammys but never won.

Although the Guns 'N' Roses are great I think they've lost their touch lately and their old stuff will always be their best.

I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else.

I love this song, its such a happy, upbeat song, its a romantic song but hasn't got that low soppy edge to it most love songs have. I've never considered myself a romantic but this song brings it out in me.

My house mate mentioned it to me a few weeks back and its been playing in my head since.

 

We all know the song from Juno. A 2007 comedy directed byJason Reitman and writen by Diablo Cody.

If you haven't seen it already you really should it's a great film about a quirky teenage pregnancy and has fantastic cast:

Juno won an Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.

Also won another 53 awards and was nominated for a further 39 awards.

I absolutely love the song on Juno. It is originally written and performed by The Moldy Peaches and I personally aren't too big a fan of their version. On Juno they sing it to one another and it feels like they mean it, the Moldy Peaches just sing a song.

The Moldy Peaches released their first record in 1996 and are a quirky look originally sadistic band. Not my cup of tea but this cover of the song makes them shine a little bit more in my eyes.

I'd also like to thank Siobhan, my housemate for bringing this song to my attention.

It is one of the catchiest tunes going in my opinion, if the advert comes on in the background it is guaranteed to be stuck in your head for days.

I've spent the majority of the day singing it and waving my hands in the air to 'Hey Now Hey Now'

I've managed to even get my housemates and boyfriend singing along happily.

It's such a feel good song although it has quite an aggressive context. It was written in 1953 by James Crawford and released in 1965 by the Dixie cups.

It's basically a story of two indian tribes encountering one another and threatening to set the other party's flag on fire.
